2023 Winter Flag Football OTA's Camp - California HS

Join us this December for Next Level's first year of OTA's (Organized Team Activities) session in San Ramon at California High School! Gather your buddies and sign up today, or hop in as a 'Free Agent' for elite 'next level' pre-season training. See below for more info!

Registration opens on Tuesday, September 5th at 9:00AM PST!

Camp is open to participants from 3rd to 6th grade (2023/2024 school year)! The Session will run on Sundays from 12/3 through 12/17.

Next Level OTA's are a step up from traditional Flag Football camp. In this session, players will be taught the distinct fundamentals of offensive and defensive techniques and their purposes. From stance, to footwork, to schemes... this program covers the details that it takes to take your game to the Next Level! Additionally, each program day will include specific situational simulations, i.e. Goal Line, Red Zone, Over Time, Extra Points, and more! Coach Danny Calcagno, assisted by his high school student-athletes, will execute the Next Level OTA's Session.

No previous flag football or Next Level program experience is required to attend the camp(s). See below for the full camp curriculum!

All camp attendees will receive a Next Level OTA's Nike Dri-Fit T-shirt along with other items which are included in the base cost of the program!

Site Logistics and Schedule

Camp Curriculum

Offense:

  • Quarterback Drills: 3 & 5 Step Drops, Scrambling, Throwing Technique, Reading Coverages, etc.
  • Running Back Drills: Ball Security, Ball Handling, Footwork Progressions, Change of Direction Drills, etc.
  • Wide Receiver Drills: Stance & Body Position, Releases, Route Tree Teach, Catching in Traffic, Motions/Sweeps, etc.

Defense:

  • Age appropriate defensive coverages (man and zone concepts), Proper stance, leverage, coverage alignments (man and zone concepts),
  • Blitz technique and responsibilities,
  • Zone coverage responsibilities, eye discipline and zone spacing discipline,
  • Flag pulling drills and fundamentals.

Game Simulation:

  • Red Zone Work: How to navigate play calling & execution in the 'Red Zone'
  • Goal Line: Finding the best way to cross the line!
  • 2 Minute/1 Minute Drill: End of Game situation, executing with efficiency.
  • Overtime Practice: Understand the Overtime Layout and transitions
  • Extra Point/Conversions: Nail down 2-3 go-to plays you can take into the season.

Site Director: Danny Calcagno

Coach Calcagno is entering his 3rd year as the head coach for Cal High football. He has 28 years of football coaching experience. Coach Cal played both football and baseball at San Leandro High from 1983-1986. He continued his education at Chabot College playing football and baseball before transferring to Sonoma State University where he lettered in both sports. In 1991 he was drafted by the SF Giants and played in their minor league system until 1994.

Coach Cal started his teaching and coaching career at his alma mater. During his time at San Leandro High as the head varsity coach from 1995-2002, they won 4 league championships, made 5 NCS appearances, and made it to the NCS championship game 4 years in a row.

In 2003 Coach Cal was hired on at Chabot College as an assistant coach. The following year he took over as the head coach and headed up the program from 2004-2016. During his tenure, he was named coach of the year 6 times, winning 6 conference championships and making it to the Nor Cal state playoffs in 2014 and 2015.

The most gratifying experience that Coach Cal has had as a coach is watching and helping his student athletes make it to the next level. Over the years he has helped over 300 athletes get placed at the 4-year collegiate level.

Coach Cal has a passion for coaching football. However, what he is more passionate about than football is his family. He has been married to his wife Cheri for the past 23 years and they have four children, Maddi (21) Ally (19) Jake (17) and Josh (15).
